Welcome to the Global Surgery Research Alliance. We are an informal working group of general surgery residents involved in research related to disparities in surgical care in developing countries. Our interests arose from the vast gap in knowledge about the delivery of surgical care and the epidemiology of surgical disease in low and middle income countries.
Surgical care and surgical diseases are among the most poorly studied and underfunded areas of global health. Surgical conditions are estimated to comprise more than twice the burden of disability than HIV, TB and malaria combined, yet we know very little about the capacity of hospitals to provide surgical care and we do not know the prevalence of surgical conditions. The Global Surgery Research Alliance advocates for studies and funding towards filling the vast knowledge gap that hinders the advancement of surgical care in developing countries, and we encourage inquiries about collaboration or how to find resources.
