Where we work

We have partnerships in three countries with ongoing research related to surgical care in resource poor settings.  The studies in Zambia pose two research questions: What is the ability of the hospital system to deliver surgical and obstetric care and newborn resuscitation?  Second, what is the prevalence of surgical conditions related to plastic and reconstructive conditions?

The work in Rwanda focuses on technology as a vehicle for addressing the disparities in surgical care, and the current study is a Phase 1 trial of a low cost negative pressure wound device.  This device was developed for use in low resource settings in collaboration with a lab at MIT.

The research in Pakistan aims to increase the research capacity of trauma outcomes research by partnering with surgeons in the US to develop a database and research skills for epidemiology studies.

In Haiti, the fieldwork aims to assess the unmet surgical need for post earthquake survivors.  The tranistion from the response to the acute phase of the disaster is being chronicled as the needs for ongoing surgical nd rehabilatation services evolve.  The project also looks at the capacity of the hospitals to deliver emergency and essential surgical care.
