Global Initiative for Children’s Surgery (GICS)
GPAS leadership participated in the first meeting of the Global Initiative for Children’s Surgery (GICS), and we remain committed to supporting the GICS mission.
The initial meeting in 2016 brought together providers of children’s surgery in LMICs to:
- Describe the current situation
- Assess needs and priorities
- Discuss a plan to meet these needs
Surgical needs for children have generally not been clearly defined through existing initiatives in global health and in child health despite the fact that over half of the population in most of these countries are children.
Similarly, while some vertical initiatives in have been successful in delivering care, such as cleft lip/palate, neurosurgery, and clubfoot, to name a few, major gaps remain, and many of the specialties have not had a forum to define priorities together.
Together, the group driven by LMIC providers from around the world developed priorities in training, infrastructure, service delivery and research, to further define and discuss with other groups moving forward.
GPAS is proud to be part of this effort!
